Assignment 3: Stephen Hawking: ‘Transcendence looks at the implications of artificial intelligence – but are we taking AI seriously enough?’

Summary:

AI might be able to eradicate war, disease, and poverty. However we must learn how to avoid the risks.AI can help world militaries whereby they can choose and eliminate targets. AI may transform our economy to bring both great wealth and great dislocation.Such technology can outsource humans and develop weapons we cannot even understand. Although the short-term impact of AI depends on who controls it, the long-term impact depends on whether it can be controlled at all. However, little serious research is devoted to these issues outside non-profit institutes.

Reader's Response:

I believe that Stephen Hawking’s fears are unfounded and i take the stand of Adam Gibson. As artificial intelligence is still currently developing new technologies and inventions, it is true that this machine oriented intelligence might end up harming us in the future, but up till now, there has been a lot more benefits that artificial intelligence has created for the earth and her people. And as we do not know what will happen in the future, we cannot be sure that artificial intelligence will only cause harm to us. In fact, artificial intelligence has helped humans in many ways that humans ourselves cannot achieve without the help of such technology. For example, artificial intelligence can limit the effects of air pollution from manufacturing and industrial processes. The USA Environmental Protection Agency has stated that many factories have started using these software to capture dangerous chemicals before they enter the smokestack and end up in the air outside. Without artificial intelligence, it is impossible that humans ourselves can detect such things as we do not have the ability to. In turn, with this intelligence, factories can reduce a lot of air pollution and in both short and long term help to save the planet. Thus I take the stand of Adam Gibson.

Assignment 2:Barbie,sexualisation and body image Hew Ying Xin(4) and Jodie Suwe(13) 4B

READING PROJECT ASSIGNMENT 2
Summary qns: Summarise the criticisms made against barbie by the author
Firstly, the author thinks that Barbie’s proportions creates unrealistic body standards for girls due to her whiteness, skinniness etc. Also, Barbie has a sexualised beauty that is used to sell sun, sex, and sand, and is now being used to sell a magazine bought by (mostly) men in search of titillation. Furthermore, the Barbie House fell short of the author’s already low expectations. Haribo secured beneath see-through plastic was the ultimate insult for her. A pretend toilet that opens to reveal Barbie's pet dolphin. A selection of "photo ops". And, in the last room, a catwalk where children are invited to dress up and be papped. The author felt that the experience was similar to walking through a haunted house with the lights on.

Reader response qns:
If the author is correct, what can people do to resolve the issues raised in the article about the sexualisation of dolls, like Barbie? Provide reasons for your answer in one paragraph, with reference to a specific argument in the article, within 200 – 250 words.
I think instead of people arguing where barbie portrays unrealistic body standards and is a bad influence on young girls. We should instead look at the bigger picture and think of ways to solve the problem instead of talking about it all the time, making people constantly curious as to what is so bad about barbie dolls.People should understand that barbies are just dolls, not living things. We should not use them as a a symbol,a vessel to contain our own stories.Barbies cant be portrayed as a feminist or a role model cause she is just a doll.It is people's thinking and arguments that affect peoples' opinions of barbie dolls which results in barbie dolls being portrayed in a negative light.I feel that if young girls are sensible enough they will know how to differentiate between the living and the non-living.Furthermore,if parents were to have taught their child well, their child would know how to love herself no matter what external circumstances there maybe. In addition,do not forbid your child from buying barbie dolls cause the more you forbid them the more they will be curious about the negative aspect of barbie dolls. In conclusion, people should stop arguing and stop thinking so negatively about barbie dolls. If their child seem to be confused about the perception of beauty, then as a parent instead of arguing,it would be more sensible of them to guide their child towards the "correct path".

Assignment 1:National Security Agency's systematic collection of bulk data phone records by Jodie Suwe(13) and Hew Ying Xin(4) 4B

Article 5
Summarise the main arguments for and against the National Security Agency’s systematic collection of bulk data phone records program in 100 – 150 words

Arguments for the National Security Agency's systematic collection of bulk data phone records is that it helps to identify terrorist associates which helps to prevent terrorist attacks and also able to help in the investigation for FBI if it is deemed relevant.Arguments against the National Security Agency's systematic collection of bulk data phone records programme is that it has exceeded current legal authority, not proved to be effective, the government can track suspected terrorists without placing millions of people under permanent surveillance,is illegal and it has set off a controversy that scrambled the usual partisan lines in Congress. Therefore, there is not a need to collect phone records.

Is it justified for the N.S.A. to continue collecting phone records of all Americans ? Provide reasons for your answer in one paragraph, with reference to a specific argument in the article, within 200 – 250 words.

I believe that it is not justified for the N.S.A to continue collecting phone records of all Americans. Firstly, human rights include the rights to privacy; people should not have their phone records being put under surveillance without knowledge. As mentioned in the article, the existence of this system was only made known to the public because it was leaked. This means that if this information was not leaked out, citizens might never find out that their own phone records are being put under surveillance and may have been hidden from the truth forever. Secondly, the U.S government’s reason for this system is to analyze links between callers in an effort to identify hidden terrorist associates. However, the government should be able to track suspected terrorists without placing millions of people under permanent surveillance. Also, there is no concrete evidence of any major terrorist’s attacks being prevented because of this existing system. Furthermore, even with this system to track down terrorists, there have still been numerous terrorist attacks in the United States. For example, the Boston Marathon Bombings where 3 were killed and another 264 were injured. Thus there is no point as the system is not very effective, and hence, it is not justified for the N.S.A to continue collecting phone records of all Americans.

Does science solve all our problems?

No i do not think science solve all problems instead, i think science create more problems in this world. For example, due to the development of science and technology, poison gas has been created and more nuclear plants have been built over these years. Also, genetically modified food such as injecting certain hormones into chickens sometimes end up creating more problems. Poison gas is not only harmful to human beings but it also contributes to greenhouse effect which affects the ozone layer of the earth and results in erratic climate changes and global warming. It is also now easier for mass killing to occur due to the presence of advanced wartime weapons like nuclear power. Although nuclear weapons are controlled under the United Nations treaty, there are still countries that do not endorse the treaty and they can still use nuclear weapons to threaten other countries which may result in a war, for example, North Korea and Iran. This will not only result in mass killing and mass destruction which will affect the economy and development of the country, but also instil fear in countries as they do not know when these countries with nuclear power might attack them without warning. In addition, innocent lives have been lost due to the advancement of science and technology, such as when bombings and wars occur, many lives have been lost due to these attacks. Lastly, while injecting hormones and other things into animals, they might contain toxics and allergens, which can be harmful to human beings who consume these products. Therefore, science does not solve all our problems but instead create more problems for us.
