ARE EXAMS IN OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM A CURSE OR A BLESSING ?
I feel that exams in our education system are a curse.
High-stakes tests are frequently used to assess progress and move students through the academic pipeline towards graduation. In order to prepare the students for these tests, schools are cutting back or even eliminating programs in the arts, and other activities intended to promote social and moral learning. What use is there to mindlessly memorize facts for a test when such knowledge are very likely not to be applied in the future when it comes to dealing with real world problems? Memorization is the easy part; whereas applying academic thought to real-world problems is the greater challenge. In other words, exams in our educations system are encouraging memorization at the expense of cognitive-processing skills. Creativity in thinking is halted due to the fact that creative thinking would not help us do well in tests, which is a major problem in our society now as doing well in tests are far more important than thinking out of the box which could create an idea that would help invent something that would benefit mankind or solve social issues.
