Xin Ni and Lucia (4C)

In our opinion, exams in our education is a curse. The purpose of having tests and exams are to identify how much the student understands and their strength and weakness. However, in the current century, tests are instead used to determine one's ability on memorizing information. Schools have been giving students materials and resources to memorise and score well for the test instead of explaining and making sure the students understand what they are learning. Education should not only be about memorising skills but should emphasise more on problem solving and creativity skills that can be used in the working society. Exams then creates the lack of the ability to apply academic thought to real-world problems. Also, education should be a way of closing the gap between low-income students and their wealthier counterparts. However, the exams today are doing the exact opposite. Low-income students are unable to afford the resources needed to actually have the enrichment they need. Without enrichment, they lose out to the wealthier students academically, especially in exams. This gap between the two will not close. Exams should be given to see how well the students can apply the skills they learned for life, and not to see how well they memorize.
