The documentary on the menstrual men that was screened in the auditorium today was very inspirational. Mr Muruganantham, who just merely started his dream because he wanted to create a low-cost sanitary pad for his wife for hygiene purposes, went on big-scale and he managed to change the lives of many women in India by creating job opportunities for them to work in the production of the sanitary pads and also spreading the awareness among women that hygiene is very important and encouraging the use of pads.
I find Mr. Menstrual men very strong and courageous and it's very encouraging. Despite his community shunning him and his mother and wife leaving him, he still continued on and want to make a difference in his community and country. Also, he did not conform to his country's traditional patterns and beliefs but chose to step out of his comfort zone. As a man, he did not face this problem but he stepped out and thought of ways to increase the number of women using sanitary pads. In India where there are many superstitions and religious beliefs, it is hard to persuade them but he was very smart to come up with a women-to-women plan to spread awareness.
I think Mr Muruganantham serves as a reminder to us that we should not be afraid to dream big in order to accomplish something big. Although there may be many obstacles and challenges to come, with determination and hard work, we will be able to achieve it.
This documentary is a local film and I think its very praiseworthy. I think people in Singapore should not be afraid to venture out into the arts industry. Like Jack Neo, he is able to produce many popular and box office movies. Also, we should learn how to appreciate local films and not only Hollywood films and change our mindset that Singapore has no place for arts.
